Shuttle Atlantis vuelve al Hangar

Una vez el Atlantis completó su misión del mantenimiento del Hubble es hora de llevarlo devuelta a casa en Florida. Dado que el aterrizaje se había realizado en la base Edwards, en California el traslado al otro lado del país se lleva a cabo a bordo de un veterano Boeing 747-100 (de 1978) denominado Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) y cuyo despuegue puede verse en el vídeo Ferry Ride STS 125 (YouTube, 9:49 minutos) y al que durante los primeros segundos de carrera parece que realmente le cuesta levantar el pesado vehículo espacial de casi 70 toneladas.

EL SCA está aligerado al máximo. Pesa vacío menos que un 747 equivalente convencional (144.200 kg vs 162.400 kg) y puede despegar con un peso máximo de 322.000 kg, que es el que prácticamente alcanza sumando el peso del combustible necesario para levantar el vuelo de todo el conjunto. Su autonomía, cuando lleva el Shuttle a cuestas, es de apenas 1.850 km.

Free as in Freedom interweaves biographical snapshots of GNU project founder Richard Stallman with the political, social and economic history of the free software movement. Harlock is the archetypical romantic hero, a space pirate with an individualist philosophy of life.
