Ultimo Despegue de la Atlantis

Con cielo nublado y a la vista de casi un millón de espectadores frente al Centro Espacial Kennedy, en Florida, la nave encendió sus motores a las 15.29 GMT e inició el ascenso para un viaje de 12 días que cierra la era de los transbordadores espaciales.

A través de tres décadas, los transbordadores espaciales Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis y Endeavour han salido 134 veces el espacio desde la costa de Florida antes de esta última misión, STS-135.

Esta historia de exploración y progreso científico y tecnológico se vio empañada por las dos trágicas pérdidas que llevaron a la NASA a decidir en 2003 retirar el avión espacial una vez que se completara el montaje de la Estación Espacial Internacional, objetivo que ya ha sido cumplido.
