Transbordadores Espaciales : Ultimas Misiones.

La misión de la nave Discovery se ha retrasado hasta el día 1 de noviembre, mientras que la de Endeavour se ha movido hasta el día 26 de febrero, con lo que la última misión de los transbordadores espaciales estadounidenses será en 2011. Este retraso en las fechas ha sido posible gracias a una inyección de 200 millones de dólares que ha aprobado el Congreso.

Estados Unidos retirará la flota de transbordadores fundamentalmente por sus altos costes operativos. El Gobierno de Obama quiere que el Congreso apruebe un polémico plan para enviar astronautas en naves espaciales comerciales, liberando a la NASA para centrarse en el desarrollo de cohetes más grandes y nuevas tecnologías necesarias para futuras misiones a asteroides, Marte y otros destinos en el sistema solar.

La NASA también ha tenido que elegir fechas de lanzamiento que no generen conflictos con misiones rusas, europeas y japonesas a la estación o lanzamientos de cohetes fijados previamente y otros actividades en la Estación de la Fuerza Aérea en Cabo Cañaveral, que proporciona servicios de apoyo cruciales para los vuelos de transbordadores.
